After exhibitions in London, Sydney and Perth this year, Jasper Knight returns to Melbourne to exhibit a group of works in his signature style, cementing his respected standing in Australian contemporary art.

The Sydney born artist has received wide acclaim in recent years with major solo exhibitions internationally and a range of prizes and grants including a finalist position for the third consecutive time this year with his work “The Honourable Bob Carr" - all this for an artist under 30.

The subject of his work, while alluding to abstraction and minimalism, are primarily street and industrial scenes that the artist has collected in his continuous travels. His London show was based on his experience of the Thames River, his Sydney show depicted industrial areas of Beijing and his current exhibition features the streets and buildings of Berlin.

While his unique portrayal of an artists travel diary offers a glimpse into other manipulated places, Knight’s prowess truly appears in the construction and surface treatment of his works, where vibrant colours illuminate and drip between each other, applied to boards riddled with different materials. Working with a small team of joiners to build varied and experimental constructions to paint on - which incorporate masonite and coloured, laser-cut Perspex - the artist has been able to produce his largest work to date, the 6 metre long urban scape entitled “S-Bahn” which is the centrepiece of the exhibition in Melbourne.

The painter’s hand is also obvious, as Knight communicates his understanding of colour and material with glossy enamels contrasting the flat colour of perspex and textures changing as they hit the different supports. Large sections of bright colours produce clear forms that are then encouraged to drip between lines and seep across other shapes.

The paintings in Knight’s Metro 5 exhibition make bold statements through colour, line, constructed materials and a unique insight into urban spaces across the world - an exhibition sure to invite a closer look.

Jasper Knight is showing at Metro 5 Gallery, 1214 High St Armadale, until Dec 2nd.
