Some people enter the rag trade because they want to make a lot of money. Others do it because they want to get recognized and look good when they’re drinking in Chapel Street on a Friday night.
Drew Sinclair came to the industry for both of those reasons, but also because he was looking for a new canvas to display his highly artistic creations. Having already spent a number of years painting, glass-blowing and making stencils both here and back home in NZ, Sinclair bought some equipment in 2003 and started experimenting with fashion design.
At the time he was working as a chef and a DJ and spent most of his weekends on a skateboard or playing bass in one of several bands. His studio is still full of old vinyl, a dangerous looking sound system and an over-used laptop streaming live DJ sets all day.
But these days his extra-curricular activities have all taken a backseat to the Bangs Boutique project, which has developed into a highly successful fashion label, complete with seasonal ranges and a fully stocked retail outlet.
The clothes themselves are totally unique. In Sinclair’s Prahran head quarters an extensive range of mens’ jeans display more styles and finishes than you can poke your stick at. From hipster boot cuts (“I wanted to cater for the rock n roll boys so they didn’t have to wear their girlfriend’s clothes) to regular fit, slouch and hip hop classics (“built to hang off your arse with class”), it’s not hard to find a design which can be developed into your perfect pair of pants.
Most people buy straight off the extensive racks, but customizing your cut, style and finish are all possible. Quite often Sinclair will find himself selling 2 pairs of the same jeans to someone who wants a smart one for dinner parties and a smashed up one for getting messy in.
Although it is possible to find the Bangs Boutique range in selected retail outlets, the bulk of orders come through the front door of the business. Operating out of a renovated warehouse behind Chapel Street, Sinclair has thrown open his lair to create a fully fledged shop with a workshop included in the mix. Let’s face it, who wants to hang out in Just Jeans when you can get the full service, complete with Syndicate Coffee and some very cool beats.
A sizable new womens’ collection will be launched at the Bangs 3rd birthday party in July and there are already designs in place for a T-shirt range this summer. There is also a growing interest from overseas stockists, with agency applications coming from NZ, UK and even France.
So get used to hearing the Bangs name. The label promises big things and Sinclair is aiming high.
“Sure, I’m always looking to adopt more shelf space, but I want to do it with unique designs and quality that makes you feel like a million bucks” he says.
Prices range from $240 -$320, depending on finish and materials.
