Australia has a penchant for ‘borrowing’ the good stuff from our friends across the Tasman, claiming credit for subsequent successes (though sometimes wishing we hadn’t – Russell Crowe, anyone?) and it would seem the fashion industry isn’t immune.
Following the success of designers Karen Walker and Kate Sylvester, a fresh crop of New Zealand talent is rising to the top and Australians can’t wait to get their mitts on them.
“Next big thing” Mala Brajkovic has already cemented herself as a one of NZ’s best new design talents, starting her label in 2005 after assisting at Karen Walker for 3 years. Within six months, Brajkovic had not only launched her own label, but her own retail space in Auckland as well.
Her current collection sees volume play a big part in creating shape, while red and black are liberally peppered throughout. Basic shapes are given some pop with cute detailing - perfect for the trend-savvy girl who doesn’t want to be labeled a fashion victim.
Juliette Hogan’s feminine, sophisticated designs are sure to be lust-worthy additions to our summer wardrobes. With an emphasis placed on quality construction, each piece is beautifully tailored with a modern yet timeless feel.
Hogan’s enthusiasm for matching original materials, colors and textures is evident, while her signature minimalist style allows the quality cut and shape of each garment to shine through.
New kid on the block Cybèle is doing her best to add some edge to the NZ fashion scene, with a slick selection of gear that manages to incorporate a tough, no-nonsense aesthetic with a distinct feminine streak.
After working within the Melbourne fashion industry for a couple of years, designer Cybèle Wiren kicked off her label back home in NZ in 2003. A Melbournian influence is almost palpable in her last A/W “Blue Blood” range, where shades of black and simple silhouettes dominated. Bold prints and splashes of color marry well with the straight-up shape and cut of the label, making Cybèle’s coming S/S range one to look out for.
Lonely Hearts Club produced a range of sexy-cool street gear for A/W07. Their no-fuss playful attitude is mixed in with a touch of sex kitten, encompassing trend-savvy shapes as well as easy-to-wear boyfriend tees and ultra cute jumpsuits and pinnies. With many Aussie youth street brands failing to score high on originality, LHC provides a welcome distraction from our own lackluster offerings.
Others to watch out for are Des Rusk, Love Lies Bleeding & Jimmy D – hunt them down at a boutique near you.
