The rising stars of Australian fashion exhibited their take on new season trends in what was the most anticipated runway show of the week. Object of Desire was presented to a full house packed with Melbourne’s most savvy followers of fashion, and it didn’t disappoint.

First up, Gorman paired tanks and shirts in neutral shades with high waisted denim creating an easy to wear summer look. Loose tunics and basic shift dresses were given shape with pocket detail and oversized cap sleeves, which gave a natural, organic feel to the show.

Wet-look silver leggings turned up the heat as sassy cutout swimwear added an injection of color with bold bright prints. A dark yellow ruffled dress made sure we know that it’s all about long, lean legs this summer, moving towards a cooler, more understated kind of sexy.

It was all in the details for Alice McCall, whose sweet round collars and embroidered trims added a little bit extra to the label’s simply cut dresses. Big, tough shoes were worked back with high-waisted denim shorts and a series of breezy floral print dresses cinched at the waist.

A slinky black halter dress added some instant sex appeal and contrasted nicely with the pewter grey and peach dresses which followed. However it was an acid green trim adorning several metallic silver dresses and tops which drew most attention, in a color combo remarkably similar to some of Kirilly Johnston’s pieces.

Jessie Hill presented a seductively sweet selection of dresses and short shorts in matching pale hues. Simply constructed dresses with cutout, pocket, and zipper detail sharpened up the look.

Short, rolled sleeve tunics with wide collars created an easy take on low-key summer dressing while a pair of low-crotch silver leggings reminiscent of Material Boy’s S/S 06 collection added a touch of futurism to the show.

Figure-hugging black bodysuits led to a stunning finale for the label which paraded out a short, puffy skirted dress with a large flip-up neck ruff – clearly inspired by an iconic Australian reptile, the Frill Necked lizard.

Hemlines rose sharply for Shakuachi as neutral colored pieces were outshone by statement sequined mini-dresses. The short, tight numbers were balanced out with long loose sleeves, but it’s probably more advisable to team them with tight denim for those of us not blessed with model-like proportions.

After presenting previous collections restricted to shades of orange, purple and grey, Kirrily Johnston displayed her new collection with limited color variation, creating what may now be considered a signature style. This time round it was an acidic green, bright yellow and soft mocha hue that dominated.

A combination of flowing maxi dresses and shorter tunics were presented alongside logo tanks and flowing skirts. Strong shoulders and sleek lines went hand in hand, while waists were cinched with wide, heavy duty triple buckled belts for a look that oozed with attitude.

LIFEwithBIRD presented my favorite show of the night, showing that silver and grey will dominate this spring. Tops and dresses in pale shades were spliced with panels of silver and pewter, while liquid-look silver shone when fashioned into high-waisted skirts and cropped jackets.

Again, tight pants were paired with fluid tops and loose shifts featuring a strong shoulder cropped up, but the label managed to make the look their own with unique necklines and sporty luxe feel. Drop-waist dresses hemmed with stiff ruffles made a statement and were topped only by a yellow maxi dress with silver accents.

To finish off the show each designer paraded out a signature piece from their collection accompanied by the sweet sounds of The Hampdens. Applause broke out as fat pieces of silver confetti rained down upon the models, a fitting end to a week of sensational style.
