Roskilde is the biggest festival in the northern hemisphere and has been rocking the Danes since 1971 (click here to check out a page of posters documenting the festival’s history. It reads like a who’s who of rock n roll)

To give you an idea of the size of this thing, the festival employs over 25,000 volunteers every year, helping to raise money for the association behind the event, The Roskilde Festival Charity Society.

Last year’s event was memorable for lots of reasons, not least being the 35 hours of rainfall that dumped over 100mm of water onto the stoic crowd.

Bands included The Who, Wilco, Arctic Monkeys, Diplo, LCD Sound System, Muse, QOTSA, Lee Scratch Perry, The Killers, Bjork, Beasties, Talib Kweli, Klaxons, Flaming Lips…….shit, my 2 typing fingers are getting sore.
 
So far for 2008, confirmed artists include The Streets, Slayer, Battles, Chemical Brothers, Enter Shikari, L.O.C, Radiohead and a the not-so-politically correct Holy Fuck.

Transport to and from the event…

Swebus Express operates in over 150 areas in Europe. During Roskilde Festival you can travel with Swebus Express who runs extra busses from Oslo to Copenhagen and directly to the festival. You can buy tickets on their website from 3 March.

Kruse A/S is a family-run company with busses departing from Germany, Norway and Denmark to Roskilde Festival. You can buy tickets on their website from 25 February.

Momondo is a search engine for flight tickets, which provides an overview of the best online prices. Momondo searches over 400 travel websites. So if you are flying to Roskilde Festival, you can use Momondo with advantage in your hunt for a cheap flight ticket.

DSB has scheduled a number of trains to run between Roskilde Station and Roskilde Festival's own station during the entire festival week.

Top tip: If you can get your mitts on a campervan for the weekend, DO SO! Properly fitted out vehicles enjoy immediate access into the caravan area and last year’s rain is a good reminder of what can happen weather-wise.
