Just a hop, skip and a jump down from Punt rd and Victoria parade is the dramatically lit bluestone and leadlight façade of Victoria Street’s newest enclosure, The Aviary.

Once past the church-like entrance, visitors are surrounded by a bustling crowd of stylishly relaxed 30 somethings, glowing under the candlelight from gothic wall mounted candelabras.

The warm red glow that shines against street-style black and white wall murals around the open fireplace, reflects off the bright yellow leathered booths of the lounge and creates the perfect environment to eat, drink and be very merry.

Brilliantly coloured cocktails with a definite kick in the heel are the order of the day, provided by well attired bar staff who manage to exude a sophisticated mix of confidence and humble hospitality.

A DJ can usually be found playing atop a bar made from sliced sections of a retired basketball court and an enormous white monastery door opens through to an outdoor garden, which is well worth checking out/getting lost in.

Dining is as relaxed as the crowd, with a selection of small, middle and large mixed plates of traditional Italian food designed to encourage grazing.

Try settling in on one of the large Chesterfield couches under the letter ‘a’ (which was ‘misappropriated’ from a fast food restaurant some time ago) and get ready to enjoy your new favourite hang out.

Cheers!
