The battle that has raged between HD DVD and Blu-Ray is essentially over, with the announcement by Toshiba’s CEO that the company will discontinue production of HD DVD players and recorders from March 08.
Production of disk drives for PCs and games will end at the same time.
Although Atsutoshi Nishida went on to say that Toshiba will “continue to assess the position of notebook PCs with integrated HD DVD drives” realistically it’s the end of the road for the struggling technology.
More than 450 Blu-Ray formatted titles have already been released in the US, while 250 are on sale in Japan.
