The Red Hot Chili Peppers are suing the Showtime Network over its use of the term ‘Californication’. Lawyers for the LA band say that the title was “inherently distinctive, famous” and “immediately associated in the mind of the consumer" with the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

"Californication is the signature CD, video and song of the band's career, and for some TV show to come along and steal our identity is not right,'' said lead singer, Anthony Kiedis.

Showtime has chosen the title for its new hit show, starring David Duchovny as a novelist going through a mid life crisis, as well as just about every girl he meets.

The fact that the character’s name is Dani California isn’t helping, as that was the title of a Chili Peppers song released in 2006.

But executive producer and creator of the show Tom Kapinos says that he chose Californication tag after seeing it on a bumper sticker during the 70s.

Of course he did.
