Imagine if Nick Cave got out some Sicilian made cowboy boots, sat down with an Australian story book, and crooned the tales to you over the top of a well produced arrangement of adult contemporary pop, with a smattering of Hammond organ and a lesson in Italian language thrown in.
This gives you a rough idea of where Six String Suicide is coming from. While country music isn't everyone's cup of tea, listeners will appreciate Pete Ross’ ability to tell a story and entertain with anecdotes from love lost and won (“My Baby’s Gone”, “Daddy’s gone”).
The standout tracks were those sung in Italian (“Sciuri sciuri”, “Dovunque andremo”), even though they may be difficult to decipher (but didn't everyone learn Italian in primary school?), they were able to deliver their emotional payload and it’s easy to see how Ross has gained great acclaim touring around the Italian festival circuit.
With a killer band behind him (the Paesanos), Ross’ album will appeal to an older, more sophisticated punter who enjoys a red wine and a good yarn.
