Label them what you will – alternative, indie, rock – but without doubt they are another UK band with a sound we have heard before.
The Fratellis trio (all adopting the band name as their surname, as you do) hail from Glasgow Scotland and Here We Stand is their second full-length release after a string of EP’s under their belt.
“My Friend John” sets up the record opening at full pelt. But from there, it’s only downhill. This opener is musically dense with each instrument forming to create a strong unified sound. There’s a lot to it, but some how it’s not overbearing.
Unfortunately not all tracks following can claim to be as such, often falling into the category of noise rather than music.
Lead vocalist John ‘Fratelli’ (John Lawler) also falls victim to this. His pipes are nothing to brag about, adding little at times to the overpowering beats. Even more annoying is the constant simple drum beat underlying many of the tracks. It’s just too basic and the overall sound tends to linger on one level for too long a period.
Being honest, this album gave me a headache. One would hope that wasn’t the intent.
At best, a pub sing-along.
