Kate Miller-Heidke truly arrived in 2007, and delivered what we've been waiting for from an Australian solo artist for years. Her debut album Little Eve beautifully combined her unique theatrical musicality and the fascinating peculiar girl inside her.
A collection of charming and eclectic songs about a modern girl's life and her world, it's the result of a focused and determined artist. Modest and gorgeous, Kate's fresh, innovative and slightly loopy folk/pop softly melts the insides of her enchanted listeners, and establishes her as one of Australia's most exciting musical talents.
Little Eve is like a set of Russian dolls. Twist open the song to find her special insight. Twist open the insight to find her heartfelt story. The album is a dozen of these dolls; introspective memoirs sparkling with a child's playfulness and imagination. They exceed the beauty of her sweet first EPs by a long way. The result of an intensive summer of writing and recording in Brisbane with Kate's collaborator and guitarist Keir Nuttall, the record also features tasteful production by producer Magoo.
The first single
Words exemplifies the slightly unhinged side of Kate. With it's Baroque riff and Aussie Hip Hopinspired beat, Words displays Kate's unrivalled ability to create intriguingly different and original music while encompassing meaningful lyrical plots and meanings. It sounds like nothing else in Australia.
The song
Mama rips your heart out not only with the emotion in her voice and the song's encapsulating narrative, but also with the feeling exuding from the instrumentation and evocative chord progressions. Kate displays a raw honesty that verges on confronting.
Kate's lyrics are often a powerful combination of comical and sad. In the second verse of her mesmerizing and moving song
Bored with Me she sings `You're getting bored with me. I'm bored with myself. I'll have another chocolate milk.'
